Prison and jail conditions

What happens to people after sentencing is not separate from the sentence.

Overcrowding, untreated illness, violence that staffing levels make inevitable, and solitary confinement used as routine management rather than last resort. A sentence to imprisonment is not a sentence to those things, and courts have said so repeatedly.

We document conditions from the inside, through correspondence with people serving sentences, and support litigation and oversight that acts on what the documentation shows.

Working on this already? Tell us where — we would rather connect you to people doing the same thing than start something parallel.
